Peter Sagan is visibly struggling at the 109th edition of the Tour de France. After the first nine stages, his best result is fourth place. He won that in the third stage, which ended with a mass sprint in the Danish city of Sønderborg.

It doesn’t look positive when it comes to the green jersey, which the native of Žilina won seven times in the past. But this time, in the fight for the title of the best sprinter, Peter Sagan is in seventh place with a huge 198-point loss to the first Belgian, Wout van Aert.

Victories don’t come easily anymore. Today, Peter has to hang on to the others in the sprints and thus fight for victory. But that brings with it risks.

Ralph Denk – manager of the Bora – Hansgrohe cycling team.

German portal sports show writes that the 32-year-old Slovak racer is already past his best years. However, Peter Sagan’s former boss and manager of the Bora-Hansgrohe team, Ralph Denk, disagrees with this statement: “I firmly believe that Peter still has potential in him. You cannot lose racing quality and extra class just from year to year. He’s the kind of guy who gets things moving.

We accomplished a lot together. We paid a lot of money for Peter, that’s no secret. But he rewarded us in return with good performances on the track.”

But why is Peter Sagan not doing as well this year as in the past? Is it because of older age or repeated infection with the coronavirus?

“He lacks confidence,” comes up with the answer for the portal sports show Ralph Denk and continues: “Victory does not come easily anymore. Today, Peter has to hang on to the others in the sprints and thus fight for victory. But that brings with it risks. Thus, Sagan’s physical energy, as well as mental energy, decreases.”
