Hawaii: After lawsuits against locals – Facebook CEO buys land again

For 53 million US dollars: Zuckerberg spreads to Hawaii – last time he sued locals away

With a million dollar deal bagged in March, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has secured further parts of a tropical Hawaiian island. Its expansion has not gone unnoticed, and critics have been raising their voices for years.

The Facebook founder and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg (36) has again bought a huge piece of land on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, reports, among other things, “HawaiiNewsNow”. The almost 2.5 square kilometer area is said to have cost him around 53 million US dollars.

The CEO and his wife Priscilla now own over five square kilometers of land on the “garden island”. A few years ago he had a luxury villa of almost 100 million US dollars built there.

The Zuckerberg family wants to be part of the island community

Zuckerberg agreed on the deal on March 19 with the charitable foundation “Waioli Corporation”. The area, divided into three parcels, also includes a beach called “Larsen’s Beach” – only the public road to it must remain free.

The beautiful nature of the island, on which around 72,000 people live, is “in good hands” with the rich couple, according to a statement from the foundation. The 36-year-old has also emphasized several times in the past that he and his wife are committed to protecting the island.

In a 2017 statement, he wrote, “We love Hawaii and we want to be good members of the community there and preserve the environment.” At that time, Zuckerberg was heavily criticized and attacked due to numerous lawsuits against the local islanders.

Petition against Facebook CEO has over a million supporters

Within the first area that the billionaire acquired, there are numerous smaller parcels owned by the indigenous people. In most cases, however, there are no deeds of ownership for this. All affected residents should be determined through legal action and paid out “fairly”.

The sale of their lands would have been almost inevitable for the families. A “legal loophole”, as the local representative Kaniela Ing described it according to the “Guardian”. “You don’t start a conversation with a lawsuit,” he said.

Zuckerberg rowed back after the violent criticism and apologized for his plan. Nevertheless, he is said to have filed further complaints about bogus companies afterwards. He denied any allegations through a spokesman: “Mark is not suing local Hawaiians and no one has been evicted from the country.”

A petition that has existed for ten months still underlines the anger of many people. “He’s building a mansion to do what? To live on Kauai two months a year? That’s inhuman. It’s sick. He has to be stopped,” it says. Over a million signatures have been collected so far.
