The tension intensifies in the World Cup qualifiers. But for England, it was not an exciting evening. Albania was beaten 5-0 after a real hat trick from Harry Kane.
England thus has the grip on the direct place in the World Cup. In practice, the English are ready for the championship even before the last group game.
England must lose to the group’s punching bag San Marino and group runner-up Poland must win against Hungary and also take back six goals from the English to take over first place. The playoff spot is already secured.
The Poles did, however what they could to improve their chances, away against Andorra. Already in the first minute, the home team’s Ricard Fernandez was shown the referee’s red card. Ten minutes later, they were already 0-2 down after goal king Robert Lewandowski and Kamil Jozwiak scored for the guests. Poland was finally able to win the match 4-1.
In Group C, the group final was played between Italy and Switzerland in the penultimate round. A six-point match, which became a one-pointer for both teams.
Switzerland shocked the reigning European champions after just over ten minutes. After a counterattack, the ball landed at Mainz player Silvan Widmer who fired a rock hard shot to 1-0. Easily removed from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
But Italy come on. In the 36th minute, Giovanni Di Lorenzo nodded in 1-1.
In the final stages of the match, Jorginho got a golden opportunity to decide, from the penalty spot, but the shot went high over.
The cross means that the position in the group is unchanged. Both Italy and Switzerland have 15 points before the final round. However, Italy has a small grip on the direct place, namely they have two goals better goal difference than Switzerland.
