Coach Ralph Hasenhüttl remains on the road to success with Southampton in the English Premier League. On Saturday, the “Saints” drew 1-1 away from Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United, earning the next “big point” after a 1-1 draw with Man City and a 3-2 win over Tottenham. For United it was the third draw in the last five league games. For the time being, the point win was enough for fifth place.

Jadon Sancho gave United the lead (21′), Che Adams equalized shortly after the break (48′). Hasenhüttl and United coach Ralf Rangnick once worked together at RB Leipzig. Rangnick was sports director there, and in 2016 he brought the Styrian as a coach. British TV commentators believe reunification is possible. According to this, Rangnick, who is moving to a director’s post at United in the summer, could make Hasenhüttl the coach.

Hasenhüttl would “fit well” for United, said ex-English internationals Glenn Hoddle and Paul Scholes in the TV broadcast of the game. The 54-year-old from Graz is therefore a candidate to take care of Ronaldo in the future. The five-time world footballer, from whom Rangnick had recently demanded more goals, played against tenth-placed Southampton from the start, but the Portuguese failed to score again.

Local rivals Manchester City are quite different: The league leaders landed their 14th win in the last 15 league games with an unchallenged 4-0 win at Norwich City. Only Southampton had recently taken a point from the champions. Match winner in Norwich was Raheem Starling with three goals (31st, 70th, 90th). The English national striker scored the final score with a penalty shot. Phil Foden was also successful (48th). City are currently twelve points ahead of Liverpool. The first chasers come to Burnley on Sunday (15.00CET) with two games in hand.

Watford does not come from the table cellar. The newcomer was beaten 2-0 at home by neo-trainer Roy Hodgson Brighton & Hove Albion. ÖFB team goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann was again on the substitutes’ bench, with preference given to veteran Ben Foster, as in all three previous games under Hodgson. It was Watford’s sixth consecutive home defeat, with the penultimate three points shy of a non-relegation zone.
