Warning Issued by Harford County Health Department

BALTIMORE – Residents of Harford County have been advised to be cautious of encounters with aggressive and wild animals, particularly foxes. Two recent incidents of fox attacks, one on a person and another on a dog, have brought this issue to the forefront.

The incidents occurred within a half-mile radius of each other in the Barrington community of Bel Air. According to the Harford County Health Department, immediate action needs to be taken to ensure the safety of both humans and pets.

Although specific information concerning the victims is limited due to privacy laws, Ronya Nasser, spokesperson for the Harford County Health Department, expressed concern over the inability to test the foxes for rabies. The situation, therefore, calls for extra vigilance from pet owners.

Nasser advised, “We strongly discourage individuals from engaging with wildlife. However, if contact is unavoidable, seeking immediate medical attention is crucial.”

To ensure the well-being of pets and minimize the risk of wildlife contact, the Harford County Health Department has scheduled low-cost rabies vaccination clinics for April and May. Pet owners are encouraged to sign up and participate in the clinics, which will cost only $10.

Safety Measures and Additional Precautions

Harford County health officials are raising awareness about these incidents, emphasizing that such occurrences can impact anyone, especially residing in close-knit communities with nearby schools. They strongly recommend the following safety precautions:

  • Maintain control of pets – keep cats and ferrets indoors and dogs under close supervision
  • Report any interaction with the foxes to the Harford County Health Department for necessary action
