Hardship clause is often used

New figures show how the courts are implementing the stricter rules on national references. Thieves or dealers are deported very often, social fraudsters almost never. Every second burglar is allowed to stay.

Ten years after the vote on the SVP deportation initiative, comprehensive data on the effects are available for the first time. The Federal Statistical Office published it on Monday. First of all, the most important finding: the judges are more gracious than previously thought. Last year, 2,883 foreigners were convicted of crimes that, under the new regime, generally result in an obligatory expulsion from the country. The courts only pronounced this in 1660 cases. This results in a quota of 58 percent.
