Hard cases at BVB: Can “too sedate”, Brandt on the bench?

With a whopping 30 professionals, Borussia Dortmund last stayed at the training camp in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, but BVB head coach Lucien Favre asked for additional reinforcements. Given this mega-squad, quite a few stars will find themselves on the bench. Allegedly including some players who would have been expected in the starting lineup.

“From the end of September there will only be English Weeks. We need two teams, two real teams, and we haven’t got that yet! You saw it at the end of last season and there were four or five on the bench that you didn’t know” , Favre made it clear that he would like more alternatives for the already lush BVB squad. It is clear that the existing staff’s chances of being deployed are dwindling. The “image“wants to know who at Favre currently has the best chances of a place in the starting XI:

So there is no surprise in goal: top dog Roman Bürki has the nose in front again, Marwin Hitz and talent Luca Unbehaun have to line up behind.

The defensive situation is less clear. Should Favre, as recently indicated several times, return to his preferred back four, according to the report, newcomers Thomas Meunier, Mats Hummels, Manuel Akanji and Raphael Guerreiro would form the defensive line. The most recently injured Dan-Axel Zagadou would only be a replacement for the time being, as would winter newcomer Emre Can, veteran Lukasz Piszczek or DFB star Nico Schulz.

Above all, Can was actually expected to take on a leading role at Borussia, but a bank place would undermine this claim. On the defensive, Hummels, Akanji and Zagadou are “ahead of the game”. In view of Favre’s preferred “high-speed football”, Can is simply “too slow” for a place in the central midfield, “Bild” explains.

Trio has no future at BVB

Axel Witsel and 17-year-old newcomer Jude Bellingham have the necessary dynamism. After his good performances in the test games, the youngster should have “best chances” of taking the place next to the seeded Witsel. Julian Brandt and Thomas Delaney, however, have to stand in line. As at the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Brandt is likely to fall victim to the return to the 4-2-3-1 system.

There should also be a crowd in the attack department. Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard, Erling Haaland, Giovanni Reyna and Captain Marco Reus apply for the offensive positions. As soon as the latter is operational again, at least one star threatens the bank. According to “Bild”, however, Sancho and Haaland are considered “inviolable”

Exciting: With the Brazilian talent Reinier, another versatile offensive player should be about to move to Dortmund and further intensify the competition. A two-year loan is allegedly planned.

On the other hand, however, further departures cannot be ruled out. According to “Bild”, Nico Schulz, Marius Wolf and Mahmoud Dahoud no longer have a future at BVB.
