Harassed, Maëlle, 14, had ended her days in Jumet: a minor before the juvenile court

A first judgment was rendered today at the Charleroi juvenile court in the context of the suicide trial of Maëlle, 14 years old. The young teenager had committed suicide on January 31, 2020 in Jumet following acts of bullying at school and the dissemination on social networks of images and videos of a sexual nature.

Three young minors, including the main suspect aged 16 and who had admitted to being behind the dissemination of a video showing the young victim naked “for revenge”, are being prosecuted in juvenile court. The latter appear separately in court. One of them appeared today.

I think it’s fair judgment

“The minor is guilty of harassment. The judge considers that she must have known that it would harm the peace of the victim. He ordered 75 hours of educational service to be carried out within 6 months. It is a particularly reasoned judgment. The judge also considers that at the level of the parents, the child was not sufficiently sensitized to the problem, and that by posting this video, it would seriously harm the peace of the victim. I think it is a fair judgment “, said Me Aurélie Henin, lawyer for one of the minors.

On Friday, January 31, 2020, Maëlle, a 14-year-old teenager attending Saint-Joseph Notre-Dame school in Jumet (Charleroi), committed suicide after the dissemination of images and videos of her to sexuality on social networks, including Snapchat. Quickly, a file had been opened by the prosecutor’s office of Charleroi to determine the exact causes of the suicide of the young teenager.

The next hearing will take place on March 29.
