Half of young people experienced negative consequences of the corona crisis • Larger economy in most regions

In almost all regions of the Netherlands, the economy was larger in the third quarter than two years ago, before the corona crisis, CBS reports. The economy was only smaller in the Haarlemmermeer region and a large part of the province of Groningen.

In the Haarlemmermeer, which includes Schiphol Airport, there was a decrease of 9 percent compared to two years ago. Statistics Netherlands attributes this contraction to aviation and related services. They form a large part of the economy in the Haarlemmermeer, but have been badly hit by corona. In Groningen the economy was about 2 percent smaller compared to two years ago, mainly because of the reduced gas extraction.

In total, the Dutch economy was 2.3 percent larger in the third quarter than in 2019. The economy grew rapidly, especially in regions with a lot of industry, such as in IJmond (Tata Steel) and in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen.
