40 percent of Flemish people order two chip snacks with the fries during an average chip shop visit. You have undoubtedly heard of a frikandel or a viandel, but do you also know the fricabel? And what can you expect from a ragouzi or a spring roll? Below you will find a handy snack overview so that from now on you always know which delicacy is hidden behind which name and which ten snacks are the most popular in Flanders.

The most recent study by the Flemish Center for Agro- and Fisheries Marketing (VLAM) in 2020 into the deep-frying habits of the Flemish people shows that we all like to eat deep-fried snacks en masse. Half of the Flemish people order a snack with their fries as standard, and 40 percent even go for two snacks. Four percent dare to go one step further and enjoy more than two deep-fried snacks.

10 most popular deep-fry snacks
With those orders, the frikandel is by far the most popular deep-fried snack. No less than 32 percent of Belgians opt for this currywurst, also known as a ‘long hamburger’. In second place is the bear’s paw or the bear bite with 26 percent. The top three is closed by the satay with 20 percent. This can be an Ardennes satay as well as a chicken satay. The viandel (11 percent) and cervela (10 percent) join the top five in fourth and fifth place. In the top ten we also find bicky (9 percent), mexicano (7 percent), sitostick (7 percent), cheese croquette (6 percent) and bitterbal (6 percent).
