half of hospitalized in Menorca despite the fact that there are more infections

Vaccination is the key to avoid hospital collapse in the ‘Mateu Orfila’ since, today, with an incidence of covid-19 in Menorca that is 80 percent higher than at the peak of the third wave – between January 24 and 25, 2021—, income is still below what it was then.

The peak of the wave that arrived after Christmas 2020 was lived in the days after Sant Antoni, and the cumulative incidence at 14 days reached a maximum of 543 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. With this rate, the hospital had 29 admitted patients, 23 on the ward and six in intensive care. Another moment of great healthcare pressure was experienced in November, when the outbreak at the Alaior nursing home raised the number of patients in the internal medicine ward to 21 and another three patients were in the ICU.

A year later, with other Christmas holidays in progress, without knowing when the peak of the sixth wave will be reached and with the arrival of the omicron variant, the accumulated incidence at 14 days on the Island stands at 972.4 cases per hundred thousand inhabitants, but the hospitalized are half that of last January, a total of 15, of which 11 are in the Internal Medicine ward and four require intensive care.

Patient record at home

The third wave was the worst in the first year of the pandemic, but nothing compared to what was to come for the flying units that perform tests and follow-up on patients, the UVACs. On January 24, the peak of care for patients with covid-19 in their homes reached 512 patients, now there are more than a thousand patients under surveillance.

This year, between December 24 and 25, 273 infections have been added, all with mild symptoms.
