Haas talks to up to 10 drivers

There are fewer and fewer vacancies in Formula 1 for the 2021 season, and there are no fewer candidates. As a result, even end-of-the-line teams like Haas are attracting a lot of attention. According to Roberto Chinchero, this is where Sergio Perez could end up.

Gunther Steiner, Haas’ boss, admits he is talking to up to 10 drivers about an engagement for the next year.

“You’d be surprised at how many people I talk to. We talk to everyone and see what we do. At the moment there are not many vacancies and we are considering everyone who is on the market, ”says the Italian in an interview with motorsport-total.

Talks started recently as Haas had previously worked on the Concorde Agreement to make sure he stays in F1.

“I respect Checo very much. Everyone knows what he has achieved. I’ve always said the same thing about Sebastian Vettel. It would be a pity if F1 lost one of them. The same goes for Nico Hulkenberg. They are all good drivers. We have many options, ”says Steiner.

The next Haas options could be Ferrari juniors. Steiner does not want to talk about them, however. “I will not reveal if we are interested in Mick because then you will ask me for more names,” he replies.

The current drivers – Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen – have not yet been negotiated to extend the contract.

“Together with Gene Haas, we have to answer the question what we want – should we keep the drivers we have? Do we want experienced drivers? Do we want to start with young talents or maybe do a mix of both? All the possibilities are on the table now, which is why I’m so relaxed, ”he replies.

The drivers themselves were asked about this issue during yesterday’s press conference before the Tuscany GP. They both admit that they haven’t spoken to the team about extending their contract yet.

“One of the things I learned in Formula 1 is never to be sure of anything. You always have to do everything you can in the car and wait to see what the future holds. There are many good drivers on the market so the competition will be fierce. But I don’t worry about her, I just do what I can on the track, ”replies Kevin Magnussen.

“I feel a lot like Kevin. The driver market is very competitive and it should be so. That’s a good thing in Formula 1, ”adds Romain Grosjean.

Italian motorsport’s Roberto Chinchero believes that the Haas team is currently the only option for Sergio Perez to stay in F1. Alfa Romeo is expected to postpone its decision until November.
