Guus Meeuwis about collaboration with Armin van Buuren: ‘Ended at the crossroads of our styles’ | show

The musical combination between Guus Meeuwis and Armin van Buuren should not be immediately obvious; as of today it is a fact. Just like dancing is the name of the song that Meeuwis is launching, with the world-famous DJ as producer and co-composer.

How did Armin van Buuren and Guus Meeuwis end up in the studio together?
Meeuwis: ,,Via a phone call about something completely different. We called each other around a performance by The Streamers, it was about the agenda: when can you and when not? Armin sometimes wanted to produce something for someone else and during that conversation asked if I would like it. But actually the idea of working together had been floating around for years. We’ve known each other since the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, where we performed at the Holland Heineken House.”

What exactly did you do?
“I drove to Leiden with Jan-Willem Rozenboom (composer, producer and pianist, ed.), where we wrote the song with Armin and his producer Benno de Goeij. Armin and I share a love for 80s music, the song is inspired by bands like Toontje Lager and Het Goede Doel. Armin and Benno made a basic melody, my band played it all afterwards. I still sang it and Armin made the final mix. I think we’ve arrived at the crossroads of our styles; dance and Dutch pop.”

Yet you release the song alone, not together.
,,Armin wanted to be the producer instead of the executive. It was a new experience for both of us. I was impressed by how perfectionist Armin and Benno work. Everything had to be exactly right, down to the last detail. Again and again a new version was made. The result sounds like a surprising foray on my part, but it’s not as far from me as you might think. I was in 013 last week for my last series Club So many-shows and played live there every night, without a band playing in the background. No matter how different it sounds, it’s still a band song.”
