UN Secretary-General Antoniu Guteresre at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday called on the world to wake up and urged the international community to step up the fight against the pandemic and climate change.
“I’m here to raise an alarm: the world needs to wake up,” Guteresre said.
“We are on the edge of the abyss and moving in the wrong direction. Our world has never been so endangered. Or more cracked. We are facing the biggest cascade of crises in our lives, ”said Guteresre.
He condemned the great inequality in the distribution of Covid-19 vaccines around the world and pointed out that in rich countries, most people have been vaccinated against Covid-19, but about 90% of Africans are still waiting for the first dose of the vaccine.
Guteresre said countries do not support each other in crisis situations, including in the face of a pandemic and climate change. However, he added that hope still exists and humanity is able to solve these problems.
Compared to last year, when many leaders previously recorded their speeches and sent them to the General Assembly due to the pandemic, this year’s leaders have gone to New York, but with smaller delegations than before the pandemic.
US President Joe Biden and leaders of other countries, including Brazil, Iran, Turkey, France and Switzerland, also addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
