Günther won in New York

The BMW driver prevailed on Saturday ahead of French Jean-Eric Vergne (Techeetah) and Brazilian Lucas di Grassi (Audi). For Günther it was the third success in this series and the first podium this year. He improved to twelfth place overall.

The preliminary decision was made in the 31st of 38 laps: Vergne had worked his way up to pole setter Nick Cassidy (Virgin) and wanted to overtake. This was when contact was made. Günther, who was in third place, used this moment to overtake both of them on the inside.

“To win our team’s home race here in New York is something very special. But especially because it often didn’t go well for us and we didn’t get as many points as we wanted,” said Günther, who himself also welcomed team owner Michael Andretti.
