Gundelfingen: Backbone for cycling in Breisgau – the regional council and the city of Freiburg provided information on the planning status of the RS 6 cycle route from Freiburg to Waldkirch and Emmendingen

“The high-speed cycle route RS6 will be an important and challenging project,” says President Bärbel Schäfer with conviction. That could already be determined by the great interest in today’s information meeting, said the district president.
You and Freiburg’s Lord Mayor Martin Horn had invited to a sightseeing bike tour and, in addition to members of the federal and state parliament, numerous mayors of the neighboring communities also accepted the invitation.

“This rapid cycle route will develop into the backbone of the regional cycle network for commuters and recreational cyclists,” said Bärbel Schäfer with conviction. She is certain of the support of the entire region, said the government president.
“We are making an important contribution to climate protection and to people’s safety and health,” added Schäfer.

“The rapid cycle route is a major project across the boundaries of the district,” said Mayor Martin Horn. It is a measure that will give the traffic turnaround in the region a further boost. He reckons with investments of around ten million euros for the smaller part of the cycle path in Freiburg alone.

The planners of the regional council, who, on behalf of the state transport ministry, will build the roughly 21-kilometer-long sections from the Freiburg city limits to Waldkirch or Emmendingen, expect construction to start by 2027.
Before that, sections of the route for the expected 12,000 cyclists per day should be completed.
By the end of 2020, they want to define the preferred variants and start planning. Municipalities and above all the population should be included in the planning. A kick-off event, several route walks and the closer involvement of citizens are planned.

The regional council expects the planning alone to cost 1.4 million euros. However, federal funds of 1.1 million euros flow here.

Today’s inspection included the possible fork points at which the route in the direction of Emmendingen and Waldkirch will divide.

What are cycle superhighways ?:
Cycle superhighways are something completely new in Germany and Baden-Württemberg. They should run on independent routes and allow safe and trouble-free cycling. They should be three meters wide in one direction of travel, and at least four meters wide in oncoming traffic, and as far as possible free of intersections. They are intended for cyclists who cover longer distances. These are mostly commuters or long-distance travelers.
Cycle superhighways are also characterized by the fact that they are at least five kilometers long and do not contain any major gradients if possible. The state of Baden-Württemberg recognizes the importance of cycle superhighways in the coalition agreement.
