“Plants that require a certain pH level of the soil should check the acidity and alkalinity of the existing soil. You can do this yourself with the indicator solution you can buy in garden supply stores. The pH level is important for the plant’s ability to absorb the necessary nutrients,” says the gardener.

PH 7 is considered neutral soil. Above pH 7 is alkaline soil, below pH 7 is acidic soil.

Care – follow the health of the plant!

A hedge is a bit like human hair: in order for it to grow and look good, it needs to be trimmed from time to time.

Leaf hedges can be trimmed in spring, summer and early autumn, from July to September.

Coniferous hedges, such as thuja, fir, yew, are pruned in autumn, when they no longer grow so intensively.

Depending on the condition and age of the hedge, it can also be a matter of simple maintenance or shaping, or moderate or radical pruning.

“For free-growing ones, sanitary shearing is performed, dead or broken branches are cut. Shaped ones need regular shearing, depending on the plant, at least once a season. Do not shape the plants in very hot weather, not even in rainy weather. If you have to shear in the middle of summer, then choose a cooler evening on a cloudy day, ” says a garden expert about trimming hedges.

What would be the best tools for cutting plants? Sharp hand shears or cordless hedge shears are the most commonly used tools. The main thing is to know the right cutting angle, taking your time and stepping back from time to time to assess the result of the cut. If you don’t trust the acumeter, you can pull the string as a single height measure,” advises the gardener.
