Guardian: “All-out war or de-escalation?” – In the mind of Benjamin Netanyahu – 2024-04-15 15:10:51

The Middle East is on fire and the planet is anxiously watching the developments, which could trigger a powerful and generalized conflict, after Iran’s attack on Israel with drones and missiles.

Now, the crucial question is whether, but also on what scale, Israel will respond, with Guardian to proceed with a relevant analysis of Benjamin Netanyahu’s dilemma: “All-out war or de-escalation?”, reports the British newspaper.

The Guardian begins the analysis by citing as an example the events of 1991, when Saddam Hussein fired Scud missiles at Tel Aviv in anticipation of Israeli retaliation, which would have confused the US-Arab coalition formed against him. The US then persuaded Prime Minister Yitzhak Samir not to get involved further, thus averting regional war.

“Netanyahu faces a dilemma similar to Shamir’s, but this time, his own decisions and mishandling have led Israel to this precarious position. In the past, Netanyahu has opted for de-escalation. The problem is that the facts have changed,” said Dalia Schneidlin, policy fellow at the Century Foundation.

After the events of the weekend, political analysts are trying to decipher Israel’s movements. “Should the response be graded on Iranian intentions or the results of the attack?” Channel 12 asks.

“If Israel’s leadership is intent on war with Iran, then Saturday’s attacks are reason enough,” Schneidlin notes.

“It remains to be seen the result of intense US pressure so that the rest of the world is not drawn into a possible regional conflict. Netanyahu’s far-right partners demand a “catastrophic response” to Tehran.

For the Guardian, it is too early “to predict the implications of Iran’s moves for Netanyahu, who sees his stay in power as an opportunity to avoid his own problems.”

“Almost half a year into operations in Gaza, none of Netanyahu’s goals have been achieved. On the other hand, he has been wielding his sword against Tehran for years, but so far has not backed up his rhetoric with corresponding action. Citizens, on the other hand, hope that he will not now see such a choice as another opportunity for his political future”…
