Growth of children: they grow less quickly in summer

Nurses at the Child Nutrition Research Center in Houston measured and weighed 3,600 children, from the large kindergarten section to the end of primary school, for 5 years. They were able to conclude two things: that centimeter gain was seasonaland that theBody mass index(BMI) was more important at the start of the school year in September.

Size seasonality

Side weight, children gain grams throughout the school year. On the other hand, on the intake side of centimeters, it’s different. So, even if when they come back from summer vacation, we tend to say “what has he grown up!”, this is not necessarily the reality.

The study carried out by Houston nurses shows, on the contrary, that children grow less in the summer than during the school year.

Beware of being overweight!

This has an impact: their BMI is higher at the start of the school year in September. Which is logical, since they grow less, but grow as much. Beware of the risk of overweight at this time of year!

As for explaining the reasons for this lower centimeter gain during the summer, for the moment there is none. Additional studies will be necessary. To be continued then.
