The Grossglockner High Alpine Road in Fusch (Pinzgau) is to be opened to traffic again next week. The breakthrough of the snow removal is planned for Monday. The opening steps are positive, but also in the second year of the pandemic, the GROHAG Group again expects a minus of 20 percent.

The Krimmler Wasserwelten (Pinzgau) have been open again since May 8th, and the panorama road with its 36 hairpin bends will follow next week. None of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG operations had taken advantage of short-time work, says the board of directors and general director of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraßen AG Johannes Hörl.
Projects implemented earlier – employees trained
Some work projects or structural measures have been implemented earlier, and some employees have received further training. The opening steps would now be positive, even if 20 percent less sales and income are expected again. “We also discussed the situation with the shareholders, what is more important is that we can unlock the Krimml Waterfalls, the Water Worlds and the Großglockner High Alpine Road again,” says Managing Director Johannes Hörl. In a normal year, the panorama road between Fusch and Heiligenblut (Carinthia) is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Austria with one million visitors a year.
In the crisis: focus on guests from nearby markets
The guests are now more focused on those from nearby markets, says Hörl and speaks of a catching-up effect. The locals are also increasingly drawn out into nature. Even if Arabs are known for visiting attractions with water, such as the Krimml Waterfalls, which also belong to the GROHAG group, they do not want to count on tourists from far away in view of the pandemic at the moment.
