Groningen IC doctor wants more research into obesity in corona patients: ‘This cannot be a coincidence’

That said Van der Voort yesterday during the broadcast of Jinek. At the end of last week he saw that at least 80 percent of the corona patients on his IC were overweight, but that percentage has now risen to 90 percent. According to him, there is a big difference in how the coronavirus develops in people with and without obesity.

Fat tissue

“If you look at the course of the disease, we see a striking difference. If you have contracted the virus, you will get complaints within a few days. After about 8 to 10 days you will be cured or you will continue to deteriorate. And then you may have intensive care need care. “

Van der Voort sees that people who are overweight belong to the latter group much more often. “So it seems that the adipose tissue plays a role in the deterioration of the condition of corona patients. They deteriorate, while people with less fat show a recovery after just 8 to 10 days.”

Receptors

Other intensive care units in the Netherlands also see that relatively many corona patients on the IC are overweight. That said Diederik Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC) earlier at Jinek.

Why is that? There is no clear answer to this yet. This is a hypothesis of Van der Voort: “It is true that the virus binds to a receptor on the outside of your body cells, that is how it enters the cell. Such a receptor is also on adipose tissue, so it could be that if you have a lot of fat cells, that you also have more infected fat cells and that something happens there, which worsens the lung damage. “

Heavy chest?

Gommers said earlier that it may be related to the fact that overweight people also have diabetes more often than average and are therefore vulnerable to the virus. Also, a heavy chest could make breathing difficult.

But it is still unclear how exactly it is. “We are dealing with a serious new illness, of which we do not know the course. This is now an observation that we are doing, and that others are also seeing.” It is not yet known exactly what role overweight plays in the development of corona.
