“Grimaldo signs for Leverkusen: Benfica’s left-back joins Xabi Alonso’s team at zero cost”

Grimaldo will leave Benfica at the end of the season and signed for Leverkusen at zero cost, the Germans announced this Monday.

The Spanish left-back has signed a contract valid until June 2027.

Grimaldo, who ends his seven-year spell with Benfica this summer, was on the list of other clubs, namely Fulham and Real Sociedad, as well as morefootball reported.

The 27-year-old player was “proud” of the effort that Leverkusen made to convince him and assumed that contacts with Xabi Alonso were decisive.

«I wanted to play in a more competitive league than the Portuguese one and this is the ideal place to show my qualities», he began by saying in statements to the pharmacists’ media.

«Xabi Alonso showed a lot of interest in me and showed the project they have here», he continued.

“I played for a top European club for seven years. I’m really excited to be able to show my strengths in the Bundesliga. For me, it is one of the best championships in Europe and unique in terms of the environment and atmosphere in the stadiums”, he added.

Grimaldo, it should be noted, will be trained by compatriot Xabi Alonso at the German club.
