Grid Operator TenneT Signs 1.9 Billion Euro Agreement for Transformers and Compensation Coils in Germany and the Netherlands

Grid operator TenneT has signed a framework agreement with a total value of 1.9 billion euros for the supply of compensation coils and power transformers to the Netherlands and Germany. According to TenneT, the coils and transformers are necessary for optimization and maintenance of the high-voltage grid.

The agreement has been signed with Siemens Energy, Hitachi Energy, GE Grid and Royal Smit. Of the amount, 1.2 billion euros is intended for adapting substations in Germany. The remaining 730 million euros goes to substations in the Netherlands.

According to TenneT, substations can be seen as “entrances and exits to highways”. They connect “TenneT’s electricity highways with the medium-voltage grids of the regional grid operators”.

Transformers are needed to make the electricity suitable for a lower voltage level. This also works the other way, for example for the transport of locally generated green energy. The compensation coils, in turn, ensure that the voltage is maintained for the transport of electricity over the high-voltage grid.

“To enable the integration of sustainable energy into the high-voltage grid via the regional electricity grid, we need a large number of new, powerful transformers,” explains TenneT’s chief operating officer, Tim Meyerjürgens.

“With the signing of the framework contract today, we are ensuring the construction and modernization of our substations in a sustainable manner and are stimulating the energy transition in Germany and the Netherlands.”
