The famous Parisian wax museum Grévin is adapting a recently presented wax figure of American actor Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson after criticism. The image was much lighter than the actor’s actual skin tone.

The American actor has a Samoan mother and a black Canadian father and is colored himself, but that was not visible in the image that was unveiled last week.

The actor himself did not pose for the statue. When he heard about it through a comedian, he posted a message on Instagram yesterday. In it, he said that his team will be contacting “my friends at the Grévin Museum so that we can work on an ‘update’ of my wax figure with some important details, starting with my skin color.”

‘Actor is right’

To the French newspaper The Parisian informs the museum that the actor is correct and “that our teams are working to rework the image to portray him perfectly.” That will happen next night. According to the newspaper, oil paint is used to make Johnson’s skin color more realistic.

The museum was previously in the news because of a very similar image. In 2018, the museum worked for months on a statue of French President Macron. However, it was not exhibited at the time because it did not look like him at all. The museum then called the image “unsuccessful” and “a caricature”.

Musée Grevin opened in 1882, making it most likely the oldest wax museum in Europe. After an online election, the public decided last year to have a statue of Johnson made. Johnson gained fame among the American public as a wrestler, but subsequently also broke through internationally as an actor.
