Greenland to export melt water Abroad

“We have large quantities of the purest water and we are now offering that,” said Minister Jess Svane (Energy) to the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel. The government has issued sixteen licenses to extract the melt water.

The island has its own government, but is officially part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It has the same status as the Faroe Islands.

Greenland is in a split. Between 2012 and 2017, 239 billion tons of Greenland ice cream have been melted. The country therefore wants to combat climate change, but the melting of the snow also offers economic opportunities. Greenland contains many valuable resources. The melting of the ice also offers new routes for shipping around Greenland.

Svane sees even more benefits from the melting ice. “It also reduces the water shortage in the world.”
