CÓRDOBA

The Heritage Commission has given the green light to the project presented by the Bishopric of Córdoba to restore the image of San Pedro de Alcantara located in the church of San Francisco and San Eulogio (Cordova). The project proposes a conservation treatment to alleviate the degradation produced by time and will try to preserve the work.

The objective of the project, with a budget higher than 19.000 euros, is to return the work to its primitive state, restoring its readability and use. As it is a devotional image, volumetric reintegration is contemplated through the use of cured woods similar to the originals. The final work includes a protective layer for subsequent mounting on the altarpiece of san francisco.

The sculpture of San Pedro de Alcántara, Spanish Franciscan saint of the century XVI, is attributed to Pedro de Mena (Granada, 1628 – Malaga, 1688). The execution date that has been awarded is that of year 1673, according to experts such as José Hernández Díaz, Sánchez Cantón or Ortí Belmonte. Others like Martín Campos speak of 1670. It is known that in the year 1669 there was a chapel with that vocation in the temple, whose title may correspond to this image, so the sculpture would already be in the Franciscan church before 1673.

The sculpture is located in the center of the altarpiece that presides over the chapel of the venerable third order, flanked by Saint Nicholas and Saint Benvenuto. Its name comes from the convent time, in which he belonged to the Franciscan tertiary community. The Church of San Francisco and San Eulogio de Córdoba is a protected building, registered in the General Catalog of Andalusian Historical Heritage, such as BIC with the type of Monument.
