Green homes, here are the boilers incentivized with the European directive’s stop on gas

Hybrid systems for the heating of the future. At least between now and 2040 when you will no longer be able to use the gasas foreseen by the “Green Houses” directive, anyone who wants to change the boiler with the tax bonus without revolutionizing their home will necessarily have to choose this type of system.

In fact, from January 2025 the bonus for “traditional” boilers will disappear and they will only be tax-advantaged heat pump boilersor, precisely, the hybrid systems, which allow you to reduce the use of gas to a minimum by using the heat pump in combination with or instead of it. Let’s see how they work and what tax breaks you can already have today.

Systems and performances

The hybrid system consists of a condensing boiler and one from the heat pump designed to work together thanks to a control unit. Depending on the external temperature and the comfort temperature set in the house, the control unit will be able to heat the water for the radiators even using the heat pump alone, or to switch from one system to another or make them work together maximizing the yield of both.

This is a particularly efficient and ecological system because the heat pump also uses heat from the environment to function. Its efficiency is indicated by “COP” (Coefficient of Performance) the performance coefficient given by the ratio between energy yield (heat transferred to the environment to be heated) and electrical energy consumed. The higher the COP, the more efficient the machine is. The minimum required for tax breaks is that of a COP equal to 4: the pump produces four units of thermal energy for each unit of electrical energy drawn from the network, as the other three units come from drawing heat from the external environment. A hybrid system, according to calculations, allows you to cut your energy bill by at least 30%, even reaching up to 50%.

Costs and savings

The advantage of the hybrid system is that it can be installed in any home without particular complications as the dimensions of the heat pump are the standard ones of the external units of the air conditioners, and the same goes for the combined condensing boiler. Existing radiators are then used, without the need for modifications, and it is possible to add splits to use the heat pump also for summer air conditioning.

As for costs, a hybrid system without splits today is advertised with a starting price around 5,000 euros, cost to which installation labor must be added. A high price but still much lower than that of the heat pump boiler, which also necessarily requires an external space being of considerable size. Prices are still falling precisely in view of the greater diffusion of hybrid systems, destined to no longer represent an exception but the norm for the future.

Ecobonus only for factory assembled systems

Regarding tax breaks, from now until the end of the year you can still use the 65% ecobonus by carrying out the entire procedure at Enea. As mentioned, only factory-assembled systems are subsidized, not “do-it-yourself” interventions with the separate purchase of the boiler, heat pump and various connection systems. Furthermore, the ecobonus is only recognized if a pre-existing system is replaced with the hybrid system, not in the case of first installation.

Immediate refund with the Thermal Account

Respecting the same conditions, as an alternative to the deduction you can request a immediate contribution through the Thermal Account managed by the GSE. The contribution, which it can reach up to 65% of the expense incurred, it is paid in a single payment if the sum is less than or equal to 5,000 euros, or in annual installments, against the documentation certifying installation and commissioning of the system. Online questions and bureaucracy reduced to a minimum if you choose one of the plants in the catalog on the same GSE website, which are already certified to be eligible for the bonus. Examining the catalogueFurthermore, you can immediately get an idea of the costs to be taken into account.
