Great Hall of the New Riga Theater (JRT) to Open with Premiere of ‘Sect of Dream Translators’ Based on Milorad Pavič’s ‘Khazar Dictionary’ – Artistic Director Alvis Hermanis Discusses Show Criteria and Inspiration

After returning home, the Great Hall of the New Riga Theater (JRT) will be opened with the play “Sect of Dream Translators” based on the novel “Khazar Dictionary” by Milorad Pavič. It is created by the artistic director of the theater Alvis Hermanis. The premiere is expected on March 19.

“For seven years, since we were gone, we thought and couldn’t figure out what show to open the new New Riga Theater with? It wasn’t easy, because we wanted to find an idea and material that had to meet too many criteria,” says Alvis Hermanis. “Let there be roles for all JRT actors. Let it also be a show about our company, the New Riga Theater, and its history. Let it be a show about the nature of the actor and the theater. Let it also be a show about the anxiously complicated times in which we live. Let this show would also be a metaphor for the destiny of Latvia and its possible future. Let this show be a journey in time and space, around the whole world and through all time. Let all the horizontals and verticals of human life intersect in it. Let the show be poetic and let its text be with the highest literary gold standard. The task of finding such material may seem impossible. But we succeeded. Milorad Pavic’s novel “The Khazarian Dictionary” inspired this JRT opening performance.”

“The novel and also the play is a story about an ancient and legendary people, the Khazars, who really lived 1,000 years ago, in about the same territory (between the Caspian and the Black Seas), where the fate of the world and ours is now being decided in Ukraine. And finally. It was important , for this show to be what we at JRT like to do best. To do something we’ve never done before,” says JRT’s Artistic Director.

The show features: Andris Keišs, Elita Kļaviņa, Guna Zariņa, Gundars Āboliņš, Baiba Broka, Kaspars Znotiņš, Sandra Kļaviņa, Vilis Daudziņš, Inga Tropa, Yevgēniis Isajevs, Jana Čivžele, Ivars Krasts, Jānis Skutelis, Kristīne Krūze, Ritvars Logins, Sabine Tīkmane , Agate Krista, Toms Harjo, Jānis Grūtups, Dāvids Pētersons, Chulpana Hamatova, Aminata Grieta Diarra, Evelīna Priede.
