The German Association of Pediatricians and Adolescents said that “Graves’ disease” is an autoimmune disease that often affects children in adolescence between 11 and 15 years.
The association stated that Graves’ disease is named after the Irish physician Robert Graves, who described the disease more than 100 years ago, noting that it occurs when the immune system attacks the body, producing antibodies that affect the functioning of the thyroid gland, which is then secreted. Too many hormones in what is known as hyperthyroidism.
The risk factors for Graves’ disease are genetics, type 1 diabetes, rheumatism and thyroiditis known as Hashimoto’s disease.
