GC – Servette 1-3
The Grasshoppers lost 3-1 at home to Servette at the start of the 2023/24 Super League season. It’s a defeat with an announcement, the match winner for Geneva is Chris Bedia, who scores twice.
Bedia put the guests in the lead in the first competitive game under coach René Weiler after 15 minutes and scored a second time after an hour after a through pass to make it 2-1. Enzo Crivelli made it 3-1 from the penalty spot after returnee Jérémy Guillemenot was fouled in the penalty area shortly after being substituted on. Tsiy Ndenge was responsible for the temporary equalizer for the Grasshoppers with a flick from 17 meters.
In addition to Renat Dadaschow’s running-intensive pressing when building up the opponent’s game, GC was primarily struck by the Canadian newcomer Theo Corbeanu. The 21-year-old loanee from partner club Wolverhampton, who also kicked the corner and fired his first appealing long-range shot after 15 minutes, kept things busy on the right attacking side in the first half. He was also able to credit himself with the assist to make it 1-1. Ndenge’s fifth Super League goal was his third from outside the box.
All in all, however, the deficits in the GC ensemble, thinned out by numerous departures of top performers, were too great to successfully hold up over 90 minutes to the only significant change in the second place from the previous season in the full-back positions. For Bruno Berner, the new Grasshoppers coach, it is to be hoped that he will receive reinforcements in the coming weeks as hoped.
Meanwhile, René Weiler Servette set two club records on his debut, including the results of the previous season: for the first time in the Super League, Geneva went eight games in a row without defeat, and for the first time they celebrated four away wins in a row.
