Granerud came to Planica as the main candidate for gold in individual competitions. He is the clear leader of the World Cup (293 points ahead of Dawid Kubacki and 556 points over Anze Lanisk), winning 10 competitions this season. But he failed at the World Cup. After the first series and a jump on 96.5 m, he was in 10th place, but he had a chance for a podium and even a victory – he was losing 2.3 points and 4.7 points respectively to 3rd and 1st place. Suffice it to say that he was ahead of the 13th Piotr Żyła by 1.3 points; A vein that eventually won gold.

And Granerud is very unhappy with how the competition went. – I think many competitions were much fairer – he said in an interview with the Norwegian “Verdens Gang”, after which he pointed out that he had difficult conditions in both jumps. In the second round he jumped only 97.5 m and finally finished the competition in a distant 11th place.
But he saved the strongest for later. In an interview with NRK, he fired: – It’s a parody of ski jumping. It’s really a shame that things like this happen at the World Cup.
In another conversation Granerud added that he knows that “competitions on normal hills can be bizarre”. “It’s boring when everyone ends up in the same place,” he said.
Norwegian ski jumping coach Alexander Stoeckl said: – I think Halvor showed good jumps. They weren’t perfect, but good enough to be on the podium. With such jumps this season he was always on the podium. But in such a competition, when in both jumps he has the wind at his back, while everyone before him at least once jumped with the wind against the skis … This way you can’t fight for the top places.
– I have no doubt that Halvor was unlucky in both jumps – agrees team director Clas Brede Braathen and called the competition a “lottery”. – No jumper is good enough to fight rivals who have the conditions on their side. Halvor didn’t stand a chance.

What the Norwegians say is true to some extent: Granerud was indeed the only one of the top 13 to jump twice with the wind at the back. He received compensation for them in the amount of 5.5 and 2.3 points (wind blowing at the speed of 0.46 and 0.19 m/s in the back). Only Jan Hoerl (5.9 compensation points) and Dawid Kubacki (7.8 points) had worse conditions in a single jump – both had worse conditions in the first round. But Kubacki, despite the worse conditions, still managed to overtake Graneruda.
For comparison, Piotr Żyła in the first round got 4.3 points for the wind, and in the second round he took advantage of the good conditions (2.8 points were deducted).

Granerud then added: – The most important thing for me is to make good jumps. 11th place is disappointing, the worst this season, but I can’t do anything about the weather and the wind. I only have control over my jumps, which were good.
The Norwegians are all the more embittered that none of them was even in the “10”. Just behind Granerud, Johann Andre Forfang was ranked 12th. And Kristoffer Eriksen Sundal and Marius Lindvik finished 21st and 22nd respectively.
Granerud will get the next opportunity to win the World Championship medal in Sunday’s mixed doubles competition with the Norwegian team. The individual competition on the large hill will take place on Friday, March 3 at 17:30, and the day after the team competition (16:30).
