Government Regulation on Import of Electronic Products in Jakarta – Ministry of Industry Limits Imports to Address Trade Balance Deficit

Jakarta

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) strictly regulates the flow of imports of electronic products. In this way, imports of electronic products such as televisions, air conditioners, refrigerators and laptops will be limited.

This import flow regulation is a follow-up to President Joko Widodo’s direction regarding the condition of the electronic product trade balance in 2023, which still shows a deficit.

Responding to this, Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) emphasized that the government is only limiting imports of electronic goods, not prohibiting or completely closing the tap on imports.

“I don’t think it’s possible to ban it, but if it’s regulated, yes,” said Zulhas when met by journalists at his home, Jakarta, Wednesday (10/4/2024).

Because according to him the WTO (World Trade Organization) prohibits countries from completely closing import activities.

“If we ban it, we can’t do it, then the WTO will get angry at us, but if it’s regulated, it’s normal,” said Zulhas.

As additional information, the Ministry of Industry previously officially restricted imports of air conditioners, TVs, washing machines and laptops through the issuance of Minister of Industry Regulation Number 6 of 2024 concerning Procedures for Issuing Technical Considerations for the Import of Electronic Products.

Director of the Electronics and Telematics Industry (IET) of the Ministry of Industry, Priyadi Arie Nugroho, said that the import restrictions were aimed at creating a conducive business climate in the country.

“This regulation is a concrete effort from the government to create investment certainty for industrial players in Indonesia, especially in the context of producing electronic products domestically,” explained Priyadi in a written statement, Tuesday (9/4).

Through Permenperin 6/2024, the government has determined at least 139 tariff posts whose imports are regulated. Where in this case 78 tariff posts are applied by Import Approval (PI) and Surveyor’s Report (LS) and 61 other tariff posts are applied only by LS.

“Some of the products included in the 78 tariff posts include air conditioners, televisions, washing machines, refrigerators, fiber optic cables, refrigerators, laptops and several other electronic products,” Priyadi.
