Government move to stabilize contract appointees in literacy mission

Thiruvananthapuram: The state government’s misguided move to stabilize those who got contract appointments in the literacy mission. The move is aimed at stabilizing about 80 people working on a contract basis, including the posts of District Project Coordinator and Assistant Project Coordinator. The recommendation under consideration by the Government will soon reach the Cabinet.

Most of them have political backgrounds. Therefore, the political motives behind the government’s move are clear. The current salary for a district co-ordinator is Rs 42,300 and for an assistant co-ordinator is Rs 34,600. Nodal persuaders working at block level have a salary of Rs 15,000 and persuaders working at panchayat level have a salary of Rs 12,000.

District Panchayat Secretaries acting as District Coordinators are responsible for the district level activities of the Literacy Mission. In addition, there are District Project Coordinators and Assistant Project Coordinators. Project co-ordinators are not specified as teachers but are paid on a teacher scale scale. He also raised his salary twice in 2016 and 2019.

The government’s move comes amid controversy over illegal appointments. There are indications that the recommendation may be delayed in the light of the current controversy, including the appointment of Kalady University.
