Government Launches Program to Expand HPV Immunization for Girls to Reduce Cervical Cancer

PALU, MERCUSUAR – The government through the Ministry of Health (Kemkes) recently launched a program to expand the administration of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) immunization to girls, to accelerate the reduction of morbidity and mortality from cervical cancer.

Head of Central Sulawesi Provincial Health Office (Dinkes), dr. Komang Adi Sujendra revealed, related to this program in Central Sulawesi Province it is targeted that immunization can be given to 54,882 children.

“This is an additional vaccination to prevent cervical cancer. Given to children aged 11-12 years or grade V SD or equivalent,” said Komang, in his office, Tuesday (15/8/2023).

The immunizations, he continued, would be given twice, with intervals between doses as determined by the Ministry of Health.

To optimize the implementation of these immunizations in the field, Komang said that his party also coordinated with relevant agencies, namely the Education Office in each region.

“The implementation is integrated like other vaccinations, namely in stages starting from the province, then districts and cities, then to the Puskesmas which are adjusted to their respective work areas,” he explained.

The implementation of the HPV immunization, he continued, was part of a transformation program in the health sector, namely giving three types of immunizations to children, in addition to Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) immunization to prevent pneumonia and Rotavirus (RV) immunization to prevent severe diarrhea.

The declaration of the expansion of HPV immunization nationally was announced by the Indonesian Ministry of Health on Wednesday (9/8/2023). The declaration was symbolically carried out at SDN 8 Tondano, Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province.
