Government Encourages Electric Motorbike Conversion Program with Subsidy of IDR 7 Million

Jakarta

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is trying to encourage the growth of the electric motorbike conversion program with a subsidy of IDR 7 million. The plan is for a new scheme to use a swap battery system.

“Adding (the swap battery option) doesn’t eliminate the built-in battery. So it’s wider. So that (like) couriers, Gojek heavy user “100 km, and with a battery, it doesn’t add money, it’s just rent, monthly rent, so it doesn’t add to the initial capital,” said Expert Expert for the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources for Electricity Sripeni Inten Cahyani while in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, Wednesday (13/9/ 2023).

Sripeni said that generally the cheapest electric motorbike conversion can cost up to IDR 15 million. This scheme is currently used for the electric motor conversion program with a fixed battery system or embedded system. Consumers get a subsidy fee of IDR 7 million, then they only have to pay the remaining IDR 8 million for batteries and so on.

Sripeni continued through the options swap batteries, will make conversion electric motorbikes cheaper. Because consumers don’t need to buy batteries, but use a monthly rental system.

“The story is like this, took an old motorbike, went to the BRT, got IDR 7 million from the government, didn’t spend any money, just rented it,” said Sripeni.

“The conversion (cost) is zero,” said Bintang Racing Team (BRT) CEO Tomy Huang on the same occasion.

This step was taken because the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources noted that 5,659 units were already queuing to take part in the electric motorbike conversion subsidy program of IDR 7 million per unit. But the realization is only 100 units. Later there will be changes to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulations.

“Hopefully, all that remains is to publish changes to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. It’s already (processed),” he added.

The government already has a quota of 50 thousand units until the end of 2023. However, only 100 units have been realized.

“Hopefully this month (the regulations will come out). We are catching up, we have 50 thousand this year, only a little left (in 2023),” he said.

In his presentation, Sripeni revealed that the realization of conversions up to August 16 2023 had reached 100 units. This figure was obtained from 5,659 people as applicants for electric motorbike conversion who were on the waiting list.

“They just registered it, so nothing has been done about it, it’s still in the hands of the owner. According to the system, it is already registered,” he said.

The regions with the most conversion requests were West Java (1,876), East Java (1,409) and DKI Jakarta (1,149). The type of motorbike with the most conversion requests is manual, 26 percent, sports three percent, and the largest is automatic motorbike, 71 percent.
