Government announces reduction in electricity rates in 10 communes to reduce wood heating | National

This Sunday, the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, accompanied by the Minister of Energy, Juan Carlos Jobet, authorities and parliamentarians of the O’Higgins region, launched the electric heating tariff reduction plan for ten communes in the country.

The measure, part of the residential energy transition strategy promoted by the Government, seeks to help decontaminate the cities in the center-south of the country.

The initiative offers a lower electricity rate to encourage the use of electric heating to replace firewood.

The plan begins -in a first stage- in 10 communes with a high level of concentration of particulate matter (PM 2.5) or with current replacement programs: Coyhaique, Puerto Aysén, Osorno, Temuco, Padre Las Casas, Los Angeles, Chillán, Chillán Viejo, Rancagua and Machalí.

The solution will allow more than 87,000 homes in the center-south of the country to access an electric heating rate that includes a special discount.

In order to qualify for this rate, customers must complete and send a form to their electricity distribution company, which must include the customer’s identification and the electric heating equipment to be used, among other information. The consumption associated with this rate will be measured separately, and will be duly distinguished on the final bill to customers. To obtain the maximum benefit, this fee should be combined with equipment replacement and good thermal insulation of homes and businesses.

It is expected that the Government will inform in the short term the channels through which this reduced rate will be eligible.
