Government announces new $ 1,000 incentive to self-employed workers

The Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced announced that free-lancers who received the incentive of $ 500 with state funds will receive a new incentive of $ 1,000 from federal funds, given the economic impact caused by the emergency of the COVID-19 on the island.

At a press conference, the first executive explained how the $ 2.2 billion allocated by the federal government in the CARES law to address the health crisis in Puerto Rico.

Likewise, Vázquez Garced explained that as of Saturday the automatic disbursement will begin for these workers.

The first executive explained that $ 200 million will be allocated for this incentive.

The Secretary of the Department of the Treasury, Francisco Parés reported that the distributions will be made through the Unified Internal Revenue System (SURI).

In the early coronavirus emergency, self-employed workers received a $ 500 incentive. These funds came from the state aid package that the Fiscal Control Board (JCF) approved to the Government, amounting to $ 787 million.

In that package, a $ 100 million item was set aside to send the incentive that was distributed through SURI.

In fact, on May 6, the secretary of the Department of the Treasury (DH), Francisco Parés Alicea, amended the Internal Revenue Circular Letter 20-21, to extend the application period of the incentive of $ 500 for self-employed workers, until on June 30, 2020.

So far, 146,000 self-employed have requested the incentive of a total of approximately 200,000 workers.

“Considering that the government has extended the curfew and total closure until May 25, 2020, the Department considers it necessary to extend the period of time for self-employed persons to request the incentive of $ 500,” said the secretary earlier this month.
