Goodbye, New York !? (Chronicle by Charlotte Jimenez)

New York … We often say that we either hate him or love him. A kind of love-hate relationship. Rather than being so categorical, I think there are days we love her and days we hate her.

How come?

Simply because it is the city of all extremes: dreams, nightmares, successes, failures, wealth, poverty.

You get there in one state of mind and leave with another. Better? Worse? Maybe a little bit of both, but in any case completely different.

After nine years in the city that never sleeps, here are two things I’ve learned:

  • Speed: you don’t waste time in New York. No BS! Do you like an apartment? Book it now! Do you see an interesting job posting? Apply now! Take the train? Choose espresso! In order not to get devoured, you need to be fast and responsive. Basically, you have to be the first! And this is not innate, it can be learned! Moreover, even on days when we are not in a hurry, we hurry. It’s instinctive – you have to survive.
  • Forbearance: At first, seeing an old lady walking her dog in a stroller is simply ha-llu-ci-ner. Then she makes you smile and, after a while, you realize that your eyes have gotten used to this permanent sight and you are no longer surprised. This is where you start becoming a true New Yorker. We begin to realize that all this diversity of people that this city offers is actually its very essence.

New York is a dream, a magic, a “vibe” that you probably won’t find elsewhere. But at what cost?

I’m not sure yet. Perhaps the chapter is not closed. Perhaps more adventures await me there. But for now I have decided to take a step back, to enjoy a little more tranquility, to enjoy (a lot) more sun by moving to Florida. I took a vacation from my life and my daily life. A well deserved vacation.
