The club defense is the problem child of the season so far. The club has already conceded 13 defensive goals, almost two on average. Now goalkeeper Christian Mathenia (31) talks about the reasons for the defensive problems.
BILD: Mr. Mathenia, what is your personal conclusion about the season so far?
Mathenia: “Swaying. There are phases in which things go well, then phases in which things don’t go so well. Also for me personally. That’s why I think we’re exactly where we belong in the table at the moment.”

BILD: The expulsion in Kaiserslautern seems to have left its mark. Her play with the ball seems a bit shaky.
Mathenia: “All I can say is that I have completely worked through this game and have ticked it off for me. It’s not wobbly, but it’s not perfect either. I work on improving myself every day. But I don’t have the feeling that it’s a big problem, otherwise the coach would have definitely come to me.”
BILD: You were very angry after the final whistle in Braunschweig and complained loudly about the lack of awareness of dangerous situations…
Mathenia: “We were actually missing that as a team in certain phases of the game. Too often we run after the music. We also often fall behind. And far too often unnecessary. We can’t rely on us always scoring two or three goals. So we just have to get into the games better.”

BILD: Why is that?
Mathenia: “At the moment, as I said, there are phases in the game in which we neglect the defense and our focus is too much on the offense.”
BILD: Is the team too careless defensively?
Mathenia: “We have to get to the point where everyone says, no, I will clarify the situation and not the person next to me. We just have to stop these little moments in the game where everyone somehow passes on responsibility.”
BILD: What makes you confident?
Mathenia: “You shouldn’t forget that we have a very young team in which some are gaining their first experience. Something like this takes time. But in training I see how everyone improves step by step. That’s why it’s great fun to play in this team.”
BILD: Difficult opponents await in the next few weeks. Can the team keep up?
Mathenia: “From my point of view, yes. We just do so many things really well. That’s why I think we can get points there too.”
BILD: At the end against Ujah in Braunschweig you had to risk everything again so that the club didn’t lose again. He was seriously injured (sprained shoulder joint)…
Mathenia: “I feel sorry for him. Immediately after the collision he said that something was broken. I had already been in contact with him, we still knew each other from Mainz. It was a situation where none of us backed down.”
