A day after Bayern’s gala against Düsseldorf, Dortmund follows in the supposedly predetermined Bundesliga title race. In the fight for the Champions League places, Gladbach holds the top 4.
Borussia Dortmund won 6-1 in the second half thanks to six goals in Paderborn, while Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Union Berlin 4-1 at home. Before Leipzig’s Monday game in Cologne, it can be said that the 29th matchday brought no changes in the front places. Five laps before the end, Bayern Munich leads the table seven points ahead of Dortmund, and remains tight between ranks 2 and 5.
Dortmund’s victory at the bottom of the table five days after the 0-1 defeat against Bayern Munich is deceptive. The team of Lucien Favre had to wait 54 minutes without the injured executor Erling Haaland before Thorgan Hazard broke the spell after a Dortmund speeding up and Jadon Sancho followed up shortly afterwards. Sancho later scored two more times, and Achraf Hakimi and Marcel Schmelzer were also successful in the Dortmund upgrade run. For Paderborn, Uwe Hünemeier temporarily shortened to 1: 2 with a controversial hand penalty.
With the ultimately clear away win, the Dortmund team prevented an unpleasant déjà-vu. In the first half of the season they had got 0: 3 against Paderborn until half-time, which they could at least correct in a 3: 3.
Gladbach as good as last 36 years ago
After the winless games against Bayer Leverkusen (1: 3) and Werder Bremen (0: 0) without the injured Swiss Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo at home against Union Berlin, Borussia Mönchengladbach again ran as desired. With the convincing 4: 1 over the promoters of coach Urs Fischer Gladbach screwed his result to 56 points – the club was so good after 29 rounds 36 years ago.
Gladbach’s protagonists were double goal scorer Marcus Thuram, Alassane Pléa with one goal and two assists, and Florian Neuhaus, who pulled the strings in central midfield and started the victory after a quarter of an hour with a strong individual performance. The 1: 0 of the 23-year-old after a clever run and good body play was also the 3000th Bundesliga league goal from Gladbach.
While the team of coach Marco Rose is heading for an exciting four-way battle for the three Champions League spots behind Bayern Munich and will almost certainly be playing European next season, Urs Fischer and Union Berlin have to prepare for a hot season finale. Since the 2-1 success in Frankfurt in the third last game before the interruption at the end of February, the upholstery on the Barrageplatz has now shrunk to four points. With Schalke (10th), Cologne (11th), Paderborn (18th), Hoffenheim (7th) and Düsseldorf (16th), the remaining program in the relegation battle speaks for the 14th-ranked Berliners.
