GM to supply Dubai’s future autonomous taxi

Cruise, a subsidiary of General Motors, specializing in self-driving cars, has signed a contract with the Department of Transport in Dubai, a major city in the United Arab Emirates, to supply a fleet of robotic axes.

Dubai wants to equip self-driving cars with the ambition of forming a fleet of self-driving cars by 2030. Therefore, a large city in the United Arab Emirates with a population of around 3 million people called on Cruise, a subsidiary of General Motors (GM dedicated to self-driving cars), showing Automotive News.

4000 robot axes in 2030

The first unit will be delivered from 2023 and is expected to have a total of 4,000 robot axes in long-term operation. Cruise was the exclusive supplier until 2029. As a result, Dubai is the number one overseas market for cruises and will initially operate in San Francisco.

Therefore, these cities will be one of the first cities to use the robot axis without a driver’s seat. Introduced by GM in early 2020, the Origin model is actually like a module, without a steering wheel or pedals, two face-to-face benches and a total of six seats. It’s a bit like the prototypes already announced by Toyota and Volkswagen.

Future market

Dubai has been talking about future mobility for some time. Published in 2016, this video already imagined the reaction of the first user of an autonomous taxi in the form of a 100% autonomous Tesla Model S created for the occasion. Customers were inevitably surprised not to see anyone driving the wheel. “By 2030, 25% of Dubai’s transport will be autonomous,” we read at the end of the video.

In this context, GM has great ambitions in this field of autonomous cars, and its development remains linked to regulatory changes which currently do not allow the distribution of this type of vehicle.
