Gloss: Another bored billionaire-savior wants to go to the Castle

After Karel Janeček, Tomáš Březina announced his intention to run for president of the republic on Wednesday. The first wants to radically change the electoral system, the second calls for the transformation of the whole country. Březina, 65, sold his company Best, a manufacturer of building concrete elements, last year, and now he is obviously bored at home with torn billions.

So why not try to conquer Prague Castle in the elections? The campaign goes not only with money and ambition to win, but also with a large enough ego, a conviction of one’s own infallibility and almost contempt for the opponent. Of course, he is not the first or last businessman who can no longer look at the unsuccessful in politics. Therefore, he lost the feeling that he was the savior who must rise and save the earth from decline.

Among the presidential candidates for the 2023 elections, there are already four: in addition to Březina and Janeček, IT businessman Karel Diviš, who is not very public to the public. And, of course, the head of the ANO movement, Andrej Babiš, who wants to announce his candidacy sometime in September. It is the example of Babiš who decided to enter politics ten years ago that may be inspiring, though not entirely repeatable, for his colleagues.

Unlike Babiš or Vít Bárta, this time we do not have to worry that Mr. Březina goes into politics mainly to protect and support his business. He sold his company, there is no reason to suspect that he wants to have all three courtyards of Prague Castle paved with Best brand paving.

In addition, Tomáš Březina can present himself as a person who has at least some experience with politics – he was a member of the ODS years ago, then the Freedom Union and later flirted with the YES movement, which he allegedly inspected in time. Today, Babiš cannot come up with a name, but when he announced his candidacy, he spoke similarly to him in political beginnings. The state also wants to run like a company. Unlike him, Babiš did not understand it and did it wrong.

To be clear: we should value entrepreneurs who have managed to create assets in billions of crowns. Březina even built a large company from scratch on a green field. These are very often gifted, successful and capable people. Of course, sometimes omnipotent, as we already know thanks to the Prime Minister.

Business experts say that having a self-centered Březina will be at least fun in the election debates. I am of the opinion that politics is a craft, the head of state should be a politician. The feeling that I am chosen is not enough. I would rather be afraid of visionaries with a messianic complex.
