Global Environmental Disaster: Consequences of the Destruction of Kahovka HPP Dam and Efforts for Restoration

We have already reported that the destruction of the Kahovka HPP dam, organized by the Russian military, caused a global environmental disaster. And now no one will undertake to predict whether it will ever be possible to restore the ruined ecological balance. UNIAN.ua explained what is happening in the south of the country after the detonation of the dam and how it will affect people’s health.

Member of the European Parliament Ivars Ijabs in TV24 program “Ziņu TOP” indicates what the European Parliament can do in connection with the ecological disaster in Ukraine.

“There is an opportunity to request that the European Union, in the person of the European Commission, gets involved in it and thinks about allocating special money to overcome the consequences of the disaster,” I.Ijab explains. He believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has quite successfully managed to attract the attention of various environmental activists with great publicity and resonance.

In 520 square kilometers, the situation will be catastrophic – agricultural lands are flooded, there will be water problems. Specially for this purpose, money must be raised, environmental experts must be involved, because in order to restore it, it will be necessary to work very hard, he explains.

We reported that Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg demanded that Russia be held accountable for blowing up the Kahovka hydroelectric power plant (HPP), which she called ecocide.

“This ecocide as a continuation of Russia’s unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine is another heinous crime (…). Our eyes are once again on Russia, which must be held accountable for its crimes,” Thunberg tweeted.
