Glitter and unicorns: rainbow corso encircled Vienna ring

No pedestrians allowed

It started with a bit of a delay until around 5.40 p.m. at the Burgtheater. Then there were five laps around the ring. The route was “the other way round”, ie against the direction of travel. In contrast to the past parades, where people frolicked on the sidewalks or pulled along, no pedestrians were allowed on the road this year. In addition, the organizer Katharina Kacerovsky warned in advance: “The viewers are encouraged to maintain the safety distance on their own responsibility.”

At first glance, this didn’t seem to have worked out completely around the start. Before the cars started, people crowded close to the side of the road to get the best view of what was going on. As soon as the pack was gone, they made themselves comfortable in small and large groups on the roadside. This year, there were also significantly fewer spectators than in the past parades.

The rainbow corso was embedded in the “Global Pride”. It is an online streaming event that took place for the first time and in which more than 500 Prides from all over the world participated with contributions, including Vienna. The video message from Van der Bellen as well as a musical contribution by the artist Conchita Wurst was also broadcast there.
