GitHub will shut down Atom text editor in December – IT Pro – News

That is not mentioned in the source at all.. It says that the Atom repos will be archived.
As a result, the source remains available as usual.

Today, we’re announcing that we are sunsetting Atom and will archive all projects under the organization on December 15, 2022.
On December 15, 2022, we will archive the atom/atom repository and all other repositories remaining in the Atom organization.

It will also have to do with the fact that Github is now from Microsoft and they have their own open source editor.

GitHub also mentions that Atom developers have started working with their own text editor called Zed

Also, I don’t see Github mentioning this anywhere, it looks to me that Zed is a separate project from old Atom developers, (who are still working for Github though).

Edit:
There has even been invested in Zed, I don’t think it’s necessary if this would fall under Microsoft/Github.
