GitHub will lay off 10% of the team and return to the home office

GitHub is yet another tech company announcing layoffs. Owned by Microsoft, the code hosting platform will cut 10% of the team, which currently has 3,000 employeesuntil the end of the fiscal year.

In addition to laying off workers, GitHub will freeze hiring. The company also announced internal changes to protect the health of the business in the short term. Offices will be closed when leases end, with remaining employees working remotely.

GitHub will use Teams, also from Microsoft, for videoconferencing, even highlighting the independence of the corporate owner. To reduce costs, the computer update cycle will increase from 3 to 4 years.

The spokesperson for the code repository said the decisions were difficult but necessary. Thomas Dohmke, CEO of the company, issued a statement where he recognizes that the cuts will be difficult for the team.

Dohmke also promised a talk with all affected employees. “Career Transition Services Assistance Benefits will be offered”amended the CEO.
