Giro555 Raises 128 Million Euros for Earthquake Victims in Turkey and Syria

Feb 5, 2024 at 7:30 AM Update: an hour ago

Giro555 raised 128 million euros for the victims of the major earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. More than 50,000 people were killed in the natural disaster in February last year.

In the first months after the disaster, the thirteen aid organizations behind Giro555 focused mainly on acute and life-saving support. They pulled people out from under the rubble, distributed food parcels, provided access to clean drinking water, provided medical care and temporary shelter. The aid reached at least 5.5 million people, says Giro555.

According to the organization, help is still desperately needed, especially in Syria and a number of Turkish areas. Yet the focus is slowly shifting to recovery of the local economy and income sources. Aid organizations also provide psychosocial help for children, among others.

Last October, Giro555 reported that more than 124 million euros had been raised. This money made it possible to distribute more than half a million food parcels. In Turkey, many temporary tents and container camps were set up and safety inspections and repairs were carried out. In Syria, most aid went to providing drinking water and setting up hygiene facilities. The money is divided almost equally between Turkey and Syria.

Giro555 calls the aid operation “huge due to the size of the affected areas, each with their own challenges”. The proceeds from the campaign will be used for aid in the region until March 2025.

“We will continue with our activities in both countries,” says Michiel Servaes, action chairman of Giro555. “Due to the extreme winter weather, we have currently deployed extra help for those people who are unfortunately still staying in tent camps.” This concerns, for example, blankets and warm clothing.
