Giant Tanker Pertamina Pride Officially Operates

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – In the midst of a pandemic, PT Pertamina (Persero) through its subsidiary PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) continues to expand its wings by launching a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) tanker with a capacity of 2 million barrels and is ready to support the distribution of national energy supplies.

The 301,000 DWT tanker named PERTAMINA PRIDE was built at the Japan Marine United (JMU) Shipyard since 2018 and began sailing on February 9, 2021 after handover directly at JMU Ariake Shipyard, Japan and was attended directly by the Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Heri Akhmadi and online by the President Director of Pertamina Nicke Widyawati and Deputy Minister of BUMN Pahala Mansury.

“We hope Pertamina will be able to optimize the utilization of PERTAMINA PRIDE so that it will provide added value for shareholders and of course for the country. Because energy security is mandatory for the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia,” said Pahala.


Pahala added, with this VLCC, the ability to secure a more efficient supply chain, which is one of Pertamina’s competitive keys to become one of the world class energy companies, is to have a very efficient supply chain including VAT of Shipping.

On the same occasion, Pertamina’s President Director Nicke Widyawati emphasized that the VLCC procurement was carried out after going through a thoughtful process and business strategy, in order to strengthen the supply chain.

“The project to build 2 units of VLCC type vessels aims to secure the supply of crude oil to Pertamina’s refineries,” said Pertamina’s Managing Director, Nicke Widyawati.

Nicke also added that with the operation of the VLCC ship, it could later become a revenue generator in increasing the company’s growth by capturing international transportation business opportunities. In addition to responding to Pertamina’s increasingly competitive business challenges, the benefits of VLCC ownership will also be felt by the state and the people of Indonesia, namely the increased reliability of supply and the smooth distribution of national energy by securing the supply of crude oil needs to the Refinery Unit IV Cilacap.

“PIS, which is developing the main business of shipping or sea transportation, has the role of supporting the distribution supply chain or the transportation of Pertamina’s imported cargo under the FOB or Free On Board scheme,” he said.

Apart from PERTAMINA PRIDE, PIS together with JMU are also preparing a second VLCC ship, PERTAMINA PRIME, which currently has 97.9% of the ship’s construction process and the handover is planned to be carried out at the end of March 2021.

“This VLCC will be an important part of PERTAMINA’s business in the future. Its role is to meet the transportation needs of FOB Crude Cargo as raw material for refineries – to secure national energy supplies. PERTAMINA PRIDE is expected to become one of the backbones of Indonesia’s reputation in the international shipping industry. I hope This cooperation can open the door to other cooperation opportunities between Indonesia and Japan, “said Indonesian Ambassador to Japan Heri Akhmadi.

VLCC PERTAMINA PRIDE has complied with international regulations such as IMO (International Maritime Organization) and IMO PSPC (Performance Standard for Protective Coatings) regulations have been applied to Cargo Oil Tanks (COT) and Water Ballast Tanks (WBT), which are important for ease of maintenance and keep the ship always in good condition.

VLCC PERTAMINA PRIDE is a ship with a single screw driven single deck type crude oil tanker, with an overall length (LOA) of 329,904 meters, deadweight tonnage of 301,781 tons, gross tonnage of 157,116 tons, and cargo carrying capacity of abt. 2 million barrels.

The advantages of the VLCC “PERTAMINA PRIDE” design include the use of Super Stream Duct®️ technology to reduce bubbles where it can cause cavitation so that it will damage the propeller, Surf Bulb®️ (Swept Back Up-Thrusting Rudder Fin with Bulb) which increases the maneuvering ability of the ship, and A-LVfin®️ or Advanced Low Viscous Resistance Fin for added stability to the ship.

Having a large carrying capacity means that the VLCC “PERTAMINA PRIDE” can be optimized to strengthen the security of national energy stocks and security which of course can provide benefits to the Indonesian state.
