Giant contract for northern Norwegian mining project – to build 130 km of tunnels

Nussir is the copper mining project in Kvalsund in Finnmark. Enormous amounts of copper are to be extracted through underground mining. Earlier this week, it became known that the mining company had entered into the largest contract in Norwegian history for the sale of copper, with the German group Aurubis.

The contract clearly means that the mining company in Finnmark has a buyer for the copper.

And now it is clear that the northern Norwegian mining project has entered into a contract with LNS AS for the development and operation of the underground mine.

LNS AS has experience from mining both on Svalbard and on Skaland on Senja. The group includes as many as 14 companies.

– We are very pleased with the choice of LNS for this significant contract. LNS has solid experience and capacity for such an assignment, with experience from the local area and mining. Important for the choice was also common language and culture, and understanding of the surroundings, says Nussir director Øystein Rushfeldt.

He looks forward to the contractor group establishing itself in Kvalsund and creating ripple effects through local hiring and the use of regional subcontractors.

– Exciting contract

Director Frode Nilsen of LNS AS expresses pride that Nussir has chosen them as a contractor.

– The contract is particularly exciting as the operation will be fully electric. It is the future and we are happy to be part of this, says Nilsen.

He explains that the company has extensive mining experience from northern Norway, Svalbard and Greenland.

– We want to employ and use personnel from the local area as much as possible and we have a conscious policy of buying as many goods and services as possible locally, Nilsen says.

130.000 meter tunnel

The contract that has now been entered into has a value of approximately NOK 4 billion and is valid for ten years, with the possibility of extension. According to a press release from Nussir and LNS, this will be one of the largest mining contracts in Norwegian history.

The contract involves concrete driving and equipment of about 130,000 meters, or 130 km of tunnel. It is almost as far as the distance between Alta and Hammerfest, Tromsø-Bardufoss or just over the distance between Oslo and Sandefjord!

The Nussir mine will also be the first all-electric mine with no emissions of Co₂.
