Giant Comet Found, Astronomers Make Sure It’s Not a Threat to Earth

JAKARTAComet The largest astronomer has ever seen shot toward the Milky Way solar system with a size of up to 120 miles or the size of London. Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein has not visited the solar system for more than three million years.

Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein was first discovered after astronomers announced they had spotted it at the outer edge of the Solar System in June.

The comet is estimated to be 60 to 120 miles in diameter and is expressed as comet biggest ever seen. Halley’s Comet, which has visited Earth alone, is only 3.5 miles across.

Gary Bernstein of the University of Pennsylvania said this may be the largest comet ever seen. “He hasn’t visited the Solar System for more than three million years,” he was quoted as saying Express.co.uk, Monday (4/10/2021).

Scientists estimate comet it poses no threat to Earth. The New York Post reports that the comet will enter the solar system and pass the Sun as early as 2031, at a distance of 10.71 astronomical units.

Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein was first discovered in June. The comet came from the Oort Cloud which according to the Independent is a collection of cosmic objects consisting of dust.
